mullings of a procrastinating pack-rat

It's almost the end of another chapter in my life. In less than a week, I'll be moving to a new place, different country, leaving behind the familiar rooms of my current home and all that they've seen while I've roamed here — beaming smiles, loud laughter, silent tears, deep conversations, hushed secrets, tender love, shiny happiness, bleak disappointment, and quiet acceptance. I'll take all of these memories with me, and I'll make them anew in that new place I'll soon call home.

Packing is a task I dislike immensely. I'm a pack-rat (ugh... there, I said it) and moving is therefore always a bigger production for me than it has to be. I know I could make things easier for myself before it comes to this, and yet, I never seem to learn this lesson. If I had to find anything good about having to sort through all this crap that I've held onto over the years, it's how one's whole life sort of flashes before one's eyes during the process.

Memories flood through my mind as I look through stuff to decide what to discard and what to keep. A box of letters, old mix tapes and CD-Rs, postcards from all over the world, photographs of friends and family, souvenirs, and many other mementos. In an instant, my mind teleports me back to another time and I see the people from that time in my mind. Some I remember fondly, others not so much. But see, they've all been part of this journey that I'm on, so it's all good.

As the suitcase and boxes fill up and the walls become bare, a bittersweet feeling overcomes me. To see your whole life stuffed into a few boxes is a bit humbling. It reminds me how small and insignificant we all really are. How tiny our footprints, compared to the vastness of the lands and oceans. And yet, when they're all put away nice and neat, our belongings make up our home, and our home becomes the center of our universe.

I'm bad with endings and goodbyes of all kinds — with people and with places alike. They're always a little sad for me, even when I'm the one who's decided to move on. The only antidote is the promise and excitement that the new place you've chosen always brings. New memories will be made, new people will come into my life, and a new chapter of my life will be written along the way. I can't wait to see what'll happen for me next.
