sing the song sounds like she reads it
When life’s myriad complexities start weighing heavily on me, one of my favorite means of decompression is to grab a seat at a mellow cafe or restaurant armed solely with a good playlist, a good drink and a good book. On lesson days, I even deliberately go there to study.
I always empathize with my friends who tell me that they’d love to do this as well but can’t because apparently there’s something about being alone in a cafe or restaurant that makes everyone assume that they’re lonely or doesn't have any friends. It makes them feel very uncomfortable.
For me, walking into a cafe alone with a book, I’d like to think that people find me an intellectual but I’ll settle for nerdy and weird. Either way, I don't care what anyone thinks.
But being an over-thinking literary geek, I’ve invented a personal game for myself where I try to match up the right place with the right meal, drink, soundtrack, and author.
For example…
Chinese café, dim sum, chrysanthemum tea, Cheer Chen, Amy Tan.
Outdoor café, salad, cappuccino, Ohashi Trio, Banana Yoshimoto.
Starbucks, spinach salad and chicken sandwich, houji-cha latté, Humming Urban Stereo, Shaun Tan.
Jazz café, cheesecake, earl grey tea, Peggy Lee, Haruki Murakami.
I’m the only nerd who does this, aren’t I?
