it's summer
what are your special things, your essentials, which proclaim, "ah! it's summer," the things or activities without which you wouldn't feel like summer has arrived? for me it has to be the following: eating melons and watermelons, fireworks, seeing kaki-koori signs outside of shops and hearing the sound of cicadas. those are my personal markers for the passing of the hot season.
and of course, for winter: seeing your breath faintly leaving your nose and mouth and chestnuts and sweet potato roasting in the oven and filling the streets with their fragrance
i'd like to fondly speak of spring, but the tortures of seasonal allergies preclude that possibility. as for autumn, it exists in my mind mostly as the prelude for winter which happens to be my favorite.
so what are your markers for the seasons?
why do i think about these things now... last night, i thought i heard cicadas whilst walking home. i just haven't heard them in so long, i suppose, that i stopped everything for like thirty seconds to take it in and make sure to remember their cries. for future posterity or something like that. i'm realizing as i write this post that the majority of my so-called personal markers have to do with childhood memories and experiences from another world. certainly for summer that is how it is. and in recent conversation i'm recalling a lot of things from the past, retelling them, telling myself, telling others. why is that, i wonder. perhaps as a way of not forgetting the things that are valuable, irreplaceable?
